The Best Family Photo Locations in San Antonio & Hill Country
· 6 min read
One of the questions I'm asked most often is, "Where should we take our family photos?"
The truth is, the perfect location isn't necessarily the most famous or the most dramatic. It's the one that helps your family relax, connect, and simply enjoy being together. Beautiful light, room for little ones to explore, and a peaceful setting often create the most meaningful photographs.
Over the years, I've photographed families throughout San Antonio and the Texas Hill Country, and I've discovered a handful of locations that I return to again and again. Each has its own personality, and I love helping families choose the one that feels like the perfect fit for their story.
Here are a few of my absolute favorites.
Joshua Springs Park & Preserve | Boerne, TX
If I could describe Joshua Springs in one word, it would be peaceful.
Nestled just outside Boerne, this beautiful park offers a little bit of everything: rolling hills, winding walking paths, towering oak trees, open fields, and the sparkling water. It's one of those places that feels tucked away from the busy world, making it easy for families to slow down and simply enjoy each other.
One of my favorite things about Joshua Springs is the incredible variety of backdrops within a short walk. We can capture images beneath majestic trees, along the water, or in wide open grassy areas that glow beautifully during golden hour.
For families with young children, this location is especially wonderful. Kids naturally become curious about the trails, birds, butterflies, and little discoveries along the way. Instead of asking children to stand still, I encourage them to explore, laugh, hold hands with mom and dad, and simply be themselves. Those authentic moments often become everyone's favorite photographs.
Joshua Springs is a beautiful choice for families, maternity sessions, and even extended family gatherings thanks to its spacious layout.
Cibolo Nature Center | Boerne, TX
Cibolo Nature Center has an entirely different feel, and that's exactly why I love it.
The landscape changes with the seasons, giving every session a unique look. You'll find wooded trails, native grasses, open fields, and peaceful creek areas that create beautiful natural textures in photographs.
One of my favorite aspects of Cibolo is how organic everything feels. Nothing appears overly manicured or staged. Instead, nature takes center stage, creating timeless images that never feel trendy.
This location photographs beautifully year-round. Spring brings fresh greenery, summer evenings offer warm golden light, fall introduces rich earthy tones, and winter creates a soft, minimalist backdrop that's equally stunning.
Families who enjoy hiking, spending time outdoors, or simply love the Texas Hill Country often feel especially at home here.
Because there are so many different environments within the park, every gallery feels unique while still maintaining that relaxed, natural style that I love.
McKinney Falls State Park | Austin, TX
Although it's a bit farther from San Antonio, McKinney Falls is absolutely worth the drive for families looking for something truly special.
The combination of waterfalls, limestone formations, tall cypress trees, and flowing water creates one of the most unique photography locations in Central Texas.
Water has a wonderful way of helping children loosen up. Whether they're carefully stepping across rocks, splashing near the edge, or simply watching the creek flow by, their natural curiosity shines through.
The textures throughout the park add incredible depth to photographs, and the soft evening light reflecting off the water creates a beautiful, dreamy atmosphere.
McKinney Falls is especially perfect for adventurous families who don't mind a little walking in exchange for breathtaking scenery.
Because this location feels more like an experience than simply a photo session, families often tell me it becomes one of their favorite memories together.
Walker Ranch Park | San Antonio, TX
Walker Ranch has become one of my favorite hidden gems within San Antonio.
Despite being located in the city, it offers a surprisingly natural setting filled with mature trees, winding trails, stone pathways, and seasonal wildflowers.
One reason I recommend Walker Ranch so often is its versatility. It works beautifully for families with toddlers, older children, maternity sessions, and even couples.
The lighting here is consistently gorgeous, especially during the last hour before sunset. The canopy of trees creates soft, dappled light that's incredibly flattering and allows us to photograph comfortably even during warmer months.
Children also have plenty of room to move without the location ever feeling overwhelming. Whether they're running down a trail, collecting leaves, or cuddling with parents on a quiet path, the environment encourages natural interaction rather than stiff posing.
For families wanting an outdoor session without traveling outside San Antonio, Walker Ranch is always near the top of my list.
Brackenridge Park | San Antonio, TX
Brackenridge Park has so much character.
It's one of San Antonio's most beloved parks, and understandably so. The towering trees, historic stone bridges, open grassy spaces, and beautiful river create endless opportunities for storytelling.
What I appreciate most about Brackenridge is its timeless charm. Families have been making memories here for generations, and there's something really meaningful about creating photographs in a place that's become part of so many local traditions.
Because the park offers such a wide variety of scenery, we can create an entire gallery that feels diverse without traveling far. One moment we're beneath enormous oak trees, the next we're walking along the river or photographing beneath one of the beautiful stone bridges.
The park is especially lovely in the early morning or during golden hour when the light filters softly through the trees.
If your family loves classic San Antonio locations with a touch of history and plenty of natural beauty, Brackenridge Park is a wonderful choice.
Choosing the Right Location
When families ask me which location is "the best," my answer is always the same:
The best location is the one that feels most like you.
No matter where we go, my goal isn't simply to photograph a beautiful location. It's to capture the laughter, hugs, tender moments, and genuine connections that make your family unique.
The scenery provides the backdrop, but your relationships are always the heart of every image.
Let's Find the Perfect Spot Together
If you're planning a family, maternity, or newborn session and aren't sure where to go, I'd be happy to help you choose a location that fits your family, your style, and the experience you're hoping to create.
Whether we're exploring the peaceful trails of Joshua Springs, wandering beneath the towering trees at Brackenridge Park, or chasing golden light at Cibolo Nature Center, we'll create images that feel authentic, joyful, and uniquely yours.
I can't wait to explore one of these beautiful places with you and preserve this season of your family's story.
